Alerts: importance, and refused alerts
Every rule has an importance — Info, Warning or Critical — and every alert goes out through a door that can close: a plan ceiling, or a safety limit. This page says what the importance changes, and what a refused alert means.
Importance: Info, Warning, Critical
Set under the rule’s Settings (Rule settings). It colours the rule in the list and its lines on the Notifications screen, and puts them in the matching tab — so Critical is the tab to open first. Use Critical for what must be seen now (a freezer above −10 °C), Warning for what should be seen today, Info for what can wait.
Refused: when an alert is not sent
Your plan gives you a number of push notifications a day — 50 on Free, 500 on Maker, 2 000 on Pro — and a number of e-mails a month — none on Free, 30 on Maker, 150 on Pro. The daily push number is a counter: you see it in My usage, and it tells you when a rule is chatty, but a push past that number still goes out. Cutting your alerts in the middle of the day is not a decision the server takes for you.
What does get refused — counted on the rule’s own page, under Today: N sends did not go out — an output cap — never dropped in silence:
- An e-mail when the month’s e-mails are used up, or on a plan that has none. The counter is back to zero on the first of the month.
- Two e-mails from the same account less than five minutes apart — the second waits for the next trigger.
- More than 250 push notifications in an hour from one account. That is not a plan limit but a safety one: no rule that makes sense fires four times a minute for an hour, and a phone that receives that is a phone whose owner turns notifications off.

In every case the rule still runs — its trigger fires, its conditions are checked — only the sending is refused, and counted.
A rule that hits one of these is usually a rule on a signal changes with a notification — one per reading, a hundred an hour. The fix is the rule: reaches a value instead of changes, a condition, a wait — Trigger: when a signal reaches a value.
